The OTHER Palm Sunday!

The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Blessed is the king of Israel!” (John 12:12-13)

Yes, our Blessed King has come. And on that day 2,000 years ago the people held Him in the highest honor by waving palm branches to pave the way ahead of Him. Palm branches were used to celebrate victory over battle in that day.

Their loud shouts of Hosanna literally meant “SAVE US!” as they acknowledged that Jesus was their King who had come from God Himself.

This was a shining acknowledgement of our true Salvation. However, the picture is only complete when we add the other Palm Sunday. The eternal, more exciting one which ours to celebrate forever.  Here is what it looks like:

After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.  And they cried out in a loud voice, ‘Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!’” (Rev 7:9-10)

In this eternal celebration, we declare forever as we wave palm branches that Jesus Christ, the Living Son of God, has saved us in every possible way! And we get to live in the joy of it.

His salvation is complete and runs deep:

He has rescued us from this corrupt, dying world and has settled us into our new home, which is the eternal royal inheritance of His life-giving promises. (see 2 Peter 1:4, 2:20)

And so now we can say with freedom that our home in this fallen world is a temporary visit. In fact, this has been the Lord’s plan since the Fall.  So as a message of hope, the Lord gave the Israelites a feast which was a foreshadow of all these realities.

“After you have gathered the crops of the land, celebrate the festival to the Lord for seven days….On the first day you are to take branches from luxuriant trees—from palms, willows and other leafy trees—and rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days….Live in temporary shelters for seven days: All native-born Israelites are to live in such shelters.” (Lev 23:39-42)

The Lord has sprinkled palm branches throughout the scriptures (and our backyards and Easters today) to remind us of our firm, glorious Victory that the Lord accomplished through Jesus Christ since before time began.

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
